PICC Device Removal

Only a trained medical professional should remove a peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) from a patient. Attending nurses should always consult the full directions for use for each product.

General PICC Removal Information
A patient’s physician will discontinue a PICC line once he/she determines it is no longer necessary. Upon catheter removal, ensure that the insertion site is covered with a sterile occlusive dressing. This should not be removed for a minimum of 24 hours.

Grasp catheter below anchor wings and pull in a slow, continuous movement, keeping catheter close to arm.

Verify Catheter Length
To verify that entire catheter has been removed, measure and compare its length with length recorded at time of insertion.
